Balloon Fiesta, Journal launch new app
The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta and the Albuquerque Journal have teamed up to launch a new app aimed at making a trip to the fiesta as stress-free and easy as possible.
Forgot where you parked your car? This year’s official Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta app can locate it for you.
Looking for a breakfast burrito or funnel cake? The app will show which vendors have those items and where they’re located.
Want to know if the launch is a go? Check out the app.
The fiesta runs from Oct. 1 through Oct. 9, and the app is available for download now.
To get it, go to the app store on your device and type in “Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta.”
Joe Leong, vice president/chief revenue officer of the Albuquerque Publishing Co., said the app streamlines visitors’ needs into one place.
“The information is coming directly from Balloon Fiesta officials,” Leong said. “They are reporting directly to the app.”
Journal reporters and photographers will be covering the fiesta as well. For their stories and photos, go to

.
The new app is tailored specifically for fiesta-goers and provides several new features. Mike McKnight, information systems manager for the fiesta, said the No. 1 request fiesta officials get from attendees is help finding their cars. So a new feature will do just that. Those attending the fiesta can use the app to drop a pin where they are parked. Afterward, the app will give them directions back to their cars.
Visitors can buy tickets on the app and submit their pictures for the fiesta photo contest. The app will include standard features such as daily schedules and data from the weather station on the field. It will give attendees real-time updates about the status of the launch.
The app also will offer locations of the bathrooms, a list of vendors and a way to search vendor offerings. The vendor will also be located on a map with directions on how to get there from the fiesta-goer’s exact location.
“Say you are looking for doughnuts,” McKnight said. “You would type that in the search box and the app would show you all the vendors at the park selling doughnuts and their location.”
Locating a favorite balloon or pilot on the field also will be easier. The app will show the location and give directions to specific launching sites of individual balloons.
